Addition by Division

Most of us probably understand the old adage that articulates the benefits of addition by subtraction. I simple example that will make sense to everyone is as follows: If you subtract Stephen Post from your lunch group - you will have a better time at lunch.  This concept is true and easy to understand. Likewise - if you subtract Seth from the ping-pong tournament - the average level of skill of the remainder of the participants goes up. Again, this shows with clarity that subtraction can bring significant benefits to an organization or a small group of individuals. (Boom-shakalaka! That was a good one - wooooo-weeeee!)

Well here is a new one for you:  Addition by Division.  Granted, this concept is a little difficult to follow and you will need to focus and "stay with me" why I spell out for you.  Even though the formula is a little messy, I have high hopes that you can figure it out.  This is how it works . . . we have added a division.  Yep - that's the scoop.  That's the whole kit and caboodle.  We made a new division by simply adding.  Math is really quite a fascinating discipline.

To be completely honest - this whole formula doesn't really work with out adding a little bit of subtraction.  We were forced to subtract Jon Hansen from IT to become the new director of this new division.  What we hope, is that by adding this new division by subtracting from IT that we will be able to multiply our productivity.  It really will be a fun thing to see unfold.  Here is what I can tell you:

  1. The name of this Division is Project Management.
  2. The director of this Division is Jon Hansen.
  3. The number of people working in this Division is 1- ish. (Senior Management and Seth Radford will be floating in and out of this division depending on the project - Jon is the "one".)
  4. Jon will be moving to the corner office located near Matt Lamm.
  5. Jon will not be able to start his official duties for a period of time due to his obsession with his current project - "Quote Tool".  When that project is done he will begin operations of the new division.
  6. Jon will be working within and with all divisions on various projects involving IT and anything and everything else.  This will involve simplifying processes, systematizing redundancies, and adding by subtracting or multiplying depending on division needs.
Since there is some time before we are completely up in running it will be awhile before we see the affects of this new set-up. However, I can say this - when it happens - it will be totally awesome!

  3. This is great Jon, I have a couple special project you could help me with. Like putting up a new layer of sheet rock every night in Bob's office until it's as big as a linen closet. (I estimate this will take about 6 months)

  5. Congrats Jon! I'm assuming it's okay if we leave our new heat induction machine and our piles and boxes of samples in your new office, right? Can we just consider these items "decorations?" Seriously though, congrats! I look forward to working with you on many projects.
